HPA
Statement in Regards to GA Flag Referendum
While
the legislation introduced by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue for a public
referendum on the design of the state flag is not, in our opinion, optimal,
it does fulfill the promise that Mr. Perdue made during his campaign
for governor.
The
choices on the referendum reflect the 3 different flags that have officially
represented the state of Georgia during its history. While HPA would
have
preferred a vote between the current flag and the 1956-2001 flag, the
referendum in its current form is acceptable, given the historical nature
of the
choices.
However,
HPA will not endorse or support any referendum that does not include
the 1956-2001 Georgia flag. There can be no compromise on this point.
This
flag represented the state and its people proudly and former Governor
Barnes actions to change it cost him the good will and the votes
of the states citizens.
HPA
endorses Governor Perdue and the Georgia legislators supporting this
effort to let the people decide which flag best represents the state.
